Tips and Tricks to Making the Most of a Week in Rome

Rome, the Eternal City, is a treasure trove of history, art, food, wine and culture. With its ancient ruins, bustling piazzas, and mouthwatering cuisine, a week in Rome can feel both abundant and fleeting. To help you make the most of your Roman holiday, here are some tips and tricks that will ensure you experience the best this magnificent city has to offer.

Plan Your Itinerary

Rome is packed with must-see sites, so planning your itinerary in advance is crucial. Prioritize what you love most, perhaps that will be the major attractions like the Colosseum, Vatican City, and the Roman Forum or perhaps it will be wandering the streets of Trastevere in search of lively bars and restaurants. When planning you itinerary we would always suggest allocating specific days for different areas to avoid crisscrossing the city and wasting time on transit. Rome is a big city so you don’t want to miss out because you were stuck in an Uber.

Book Tickets in Advance

Popular attractions can have long lines, especially during peak tourist seasons. Booking tickets online in advance not only saves time but also often allows you to skip the lines. Another way you can ensure you can gain access to the sites is to book a tour which includes a skip the line.  Check out our favourites Roman tours here (link to either a Rome spotlight page or  some Viator tours)

Start Your Days Early

Rome’s attractions are less crowded in the early morning, giving you a more enjoyable experience. Aim to arrive at major sites like the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums as soon as they open. Plus, the morning light is perfect for photography.  Note this may mean you need to take a nap mid afternoon to survive the dining times of the locals which generally start quite late.

Explore Beyond the Tourist Spots

While the major attractions are a must, don’t miss out on Rome’s lesser-known gems. Wander through Trastevere’s charming streets, visit the ancient Appian Way, or relax in the Borghese Gardens. These spots offer a glimpse into the local life and quieter, yet equally beautiful, experiences.  If you ever see our travel plans there is always plenty of time to stop in a cafe in a side or back street and watch the world continue around you.  Rome is so much more than just a tourist stop off so enjoy the vibe as much as you do the history and art.

Embrace the Local Cuisine

Rome’s culinary scene is legendary. From pasta carbonara (the real one) to gelato, indulge in the local flavors. Avoid touristy restaurants near major attractions and instead, dine at trattorias frequented by locals. Don’t miss out on trying traditional Roman dishes like cacio e pepe and supplì and definitely don’t let not understanding the menu (in Italian) hold you back from dining somewhere.  Some of the best food I have ever had in the world I had no idea what I was ordering.  Also asking for suggestions is a great way to find things you would never normally choose.  You never know what joys you may find.

Use Public Transportation

Rome’s public transportation system is efficient and affordable. The metro, buses, and trams can get you almost anywhere you need to go. Consider buying a week-long transport pass to save money and make getting around hassle-free.  Just make sure you hold onto your things.  My very first trip to Rome at 20 I had my wallet stolen out of my bag on the train so remain vigilant with your belongings.

Stay Hydrated and Wear Comfortable Shoes

Exploring Rome involves a lot of walking, often on uneven cobblestones. Wear comfortable shoes and carry a reusable water bottle. Rome has many public drinking fountains, known as “nasoni,” where you can refill your bottle with fresh, cold water and yes it is safe to drink.

Capture the Moments

Rome is incredibly photogenic. Every direction or angle you look something is beautiful. Keep your camera or smartphone handy to capture its stunning architecture, vibrant street scenes, and beautiful sunsets. These memories will be wonderful souvenirs from your trip. Who knows maybe you like us will wind up with books filled with long-lasting memories.

A week in Rome can be a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. By planning ahead, embracing local culture, and allowing yourself to truly immerse in the city’s charm, you’ll create memories that last a lifetime.
