Getting there & Getting around
Getting There
By Plane: Fly directly into Santorini National Airport (JTR) from major cities in Europe. The airport is well-connected and offers a quick and scenic route to the island.
By Ferry: Experience the beauty of the Aegean Sea by taking a ferry from Athens or other nearby islands. Visit Ferryhopper to find the best ferry routes and schedules.
Getting Around
To truly explore Santorini’s hidden gems and breathtaking views, we strongly recommend hiring a car. This gives you the freedom to reach harder-to-find places and enjoy the island at your own pace. Car hire was affordable, and getting around was a breeze, as most spots were within a 10-15 minute drive.
However, parking can be a bit complicated, especially in busier areas like Fira or Oia. We suggest pre-organizing parking if you’re staying in these popular towns to avoid any hassles. With a car, you’ll have the flexibility to visit all the beautiful beaches, scenic viewpoints, and charming villages that Santorini has to offer.

Wandering through Oia’s narrow, winding streets is a delight. The village is a maze of quaint shops, art galleries, and cozy cafes, each offering a unique glimpse into local culture. The highlight of visiting Oia is witnessing its world-famous sunset, best enjoyed from Oia Castle or a cliffside terrace.
Oia also boasts some of the island’s finest dining experiences. From traditional Greek tavernas to upscale restaurants, the culinary scene is diverse and delicious. We stumbled upon several amazing cafes and bars with incredible views, perfect for enjoying fresh seafood, local wines, and traditional dishes.
Exploring Oia is a feast for the senses, offering a perfect blend of beauty, culture, and culinary delights. Whether you’re strolling through its picturesque streets or savoring the sunset, Oia promises an unforgettable experience.
Sailing Trip Around the Caldera
One of the experiences we regret missing during our visit to Santorini is a sailing trip around the caldera. This adventure offers a unique perspective of the island’s stunning landscapes and geological wonders.
A sailing trip around the caldera allows you to explore Santorini’s volcanic history up close. The journey typically includes stops at the volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni, where you can hike up to the active craters and enjoy a dip in the hot springs. The contrast of the black lava rocks against the deep blue sea is truly mesmerizing.
The sail also takes you past the iconic white-washed villages perched on the cliffs, providing breathtaking views that you can’t see from the land. You’ll have the opportunity to swim in the crystal-clear waters, relax on the deck, and soak up the sun while the gentle sea breeze keeps you cool.
Many tours offer onboard dining, where you can savor delicious Greek cuisine while taking in the panoramic views of the caldera. Sunset cruises are particularly popular, as they allow you to witness the magical Santorini sunset from the water, casting a golden glow over the island.
Missing out on this sailing trip is something we truly regret, and we highly recommend it to anyone visiting Santorini. It’s an unforgettable experience that showcases the island’s natural beauty and charm from a completely different perspective. Wine Tasting at Artemis Karamolegos
One of the highlights of our Santorini trip was the wine tasting experience at Artemis Karamolegos Winery. Nestled in the heart of the island, this winery offers a perfect blend of beautiful gardens, amazing views, and fantastic wine.
From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the serene atmosphere and lush gardens surrounding the winery. The setting was truly picturesque, with vibrant flowers and greenery creating a tranquil escape. As we explored the grounds, we couldn’t help but be enchanted by the stunning views of the vineyards and the Aegean Sea in the distance.
The wine tasting itself was exceptional. We sampled a variety of wines, each showcasing the unique flavors and characteristics of Santorini’s volcanic soil. The knowledgeable staff guided us through the tasting, providing insights into the winemaking process and the distinct qualities of each wine. We were particularly impressed by their Assyrtiko, a crisp and refreshing white wine that perfectly captures the essence of Santorini.
In addition to the fantastic wine, the winery also offers delicious food pairings that complement the tasting experience. We enjoyed a selection of local cheeses, olives, and bread, enhancing the flavors of the wines and adding to the overall enjoyment of the visit.

Cliffside Beauty of Fira
Our visit to Fira, the bustling capital of Santorini, was a highlight of our trip. Perched on the edge of the caldera, Fira offers breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and dramatic volcanic cliffs.

The dining in Fira is fantastic, with numerous restaurants offering delicious Greek cuisine and terraces with panoramic caldera views. We savored fresh seafood and traditional dishes like moussaka and souvlaki while soaking in the stunning scenery.
The stairs from the bay at the base of the cliff to the top are a challenge, especially in peak summer, so we don’t recommend tackling them during the hottest months.
While Fira is vibrant and full of life, it’s not as extensive as Oia, so you don’t need as much time to explore. A morning or afternoon is plenty to experience the best of what Fira has to offer.
